Le Kurdistan irakien, région\r\nautonome d'Irak qui a développé une gouvernance démocratique, propose aujourd'hui une\r\nsociété moderne, qui puise ses racines dans un héritage traditionnel fort et se tourne\r\nrésolument vers des lendemains prospères. \r\nAu delà des montagnes : l'urbanisation kurde\r\nLoin de l'image d’Epinal des kurdes perçus comme une population majoritairement rurale, le\r\nKurdistan irakien nouveau trace un chemin de continuité entre ses habitants des régions\r\nd'altitude, vivant majoritairement de l'élevage, et les locataires surinvestis des grandes villes\r\nde Souleymanieh, Duhok ou encore de sa capitale Erbil, qui compte 1,5 millions d'habitants.\r\nPourvue d’une citadelle classée au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco, cette dernière est une\r\nville moderne en plein développement. Elle est la destination de missions de politiciens et\r\nacteurs économiques internationaux et d'une classe moyenne et fortunée kurde. Ici comme\r\npartout dans la région, la jeunesse hyperconnectée côtoie les familles bohèmes, les médias\r\nrègnent sur les grands bâtiments du centre-ville à l'instar des plateaux de la Télévision\r\nRudaw, et les bazars permettent à tout à chacun de s'octroyer des moments de détente,\r\nentre volutes orientales des chichas et musiques ouatée du bar Chopin de l'hôtel Divan.\r\nNon loin, en périphérie des villes, l'économie du pétrole s'organise. La production d'or noir\r\ndu Kurdistan Irakien représenterait selon son gouvernement 30% de la production irakienne,\r\n10% selon les observateurs, avec des raffineries tentaculaires comme celle de Kawergosk,\r\nsituée à quelques kilomètres d'Erbil.\r\nTrajectoire d'une population en voie d'épanouissement\r\nAinsi, en digne héritière d'un peuple en quête d'identité, de terre et d'autonomie, les kurdes\r\nd'Irak évoluent désormais selon les règles d'or des sociétés dites modernes. Leurs écoles,\r\nmunies de professeurs internationaux et alignées pour certaines sur des pédagogies telles\r\nque l'approche Montessori dans la ville de Blé, forment la jeunesse à poser un regard sur le\r\nmonde. \r\nLes universités, elles, accueillent des étudiants en mal de création et d'expression. Les\r\ndépartements de musicologie et de théâtre de l'Université Salahaddin à Souleimanyie\r\naccompagnent des réfugiés venus ici trouver dans l'art, une langue nouvelle pour\r\ntransmettre leurs témoignages. \r\nDes communautés spirituelles multiples, naissent des temps forts de la vie commune, autour\r\nde célébrations auxquels sont conviés tous et toutes, quelle que soit leur croyance. Enfin,\r\nl'organisation politique du Kurdistan irakien tend vers un fonctionnement démocratique et\r\nparitaire, qui en a fait l'interlocuteur privilégié de la coalition internationale.\r\n\r\nFor the contemporary societies of both East and West, the notion of change, which is at the\r\nheart of the sociological ideology of progress and modernization, is synonymous with\r\ncomfort, industrialization and efficiency. Today, Iraqi Kurdistan, an autonomous region of\r\nIraq that has developed democratic governance, offers the world a modern society with\r\ndeep roots in ancient cultural traditions even as they turn resolutely towards prosperous\r\ntomorrows.\r\nBeyond the Mountains: Kurdish Urbanization\r\nA far cry from the stereotype of an overwhelmingly rural population, today the average\r\ninhabitant of Iraqi Kurdistan would be a city dweller renting in one of the large metropolises\r\nof Sulaymaniyah, Duhok or the capital city of Erbil, which numbers 1.5 million inhabitants.\r\nThey nevertheless remain consistently linked to the inhabitants who live in the mountainous\r\nregions and who live mainly from livestock farming. Topped with an ancient citadel that is\r\npart of the UNESCO World Heritage List, Erbil is a modern city in the midst of expansion and\r\ngrowth. International economic actors, as well as politicians congregate there, along with a\r\nprosperous Kurdish middle class. Here, and throughout the region, presides a youth culture\r\nthat is totally connected to the world, alongside bohemian families. The media dominate the\r\nskyline of the city center, which features the studios of Rudaw Television, and one can\r\nwander and relax in the city’s bazaars, lingering amidst the smoke of the narghiles, or whiling\r\naway the hours at the relaxing Chopin music bar at the Hotel Divan. Not far off, around the\r\nedges of the city, an oil economy is organizing itself. The production of Iraqi Kurdistan’s black\r\ngold represents 30% of total Iraqi production according to its government, and 10%\r\naccording to observers, and sprawling refineries such as that of Kawergosk, can be found a\r\nfew short kilometers away from Erbil.\r\n\r\nA People on the Path to Fulfillment\r\nA people with a worthy legacy in search of identity, land and autonomy, the Kurds of Iraq\r\nhave been evolving according to the golden rules of so-called modern societies. Their\r\nschools, staffed with professors from all over the world, espouse such pedagogical\r\napproaches as Montessori (in the city of Blé), produce students whose eyes are open to the\r\nworld.\r\nAs for the universities, they have students who have a deep need for creation and\r\nexpression.
